Interview with GEORGIA MAY JAGGER

Stylebible Reporter 'Paula Burns' talks to Georgia May Jagger on her recent promotional trip to Dublin.

It’s not every day you meet a member of Rock Royalty and I have to admit I was a little nervous coming up to interviewing Georgia May Jagger. While I know she’s the new kid on the block, as a dedicated follower of fashion I have watched her career develop over the past few years and so was curious to meet her.  With parents as famous as the Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and 80’s supermodel Jerry Hall, I was expecting a bit of a spoilt brat instead I was met with a polite softly spoken stunner with lips to die for. After complimenting my outfit and Topshop skull ring the questions flowed like we were two new best friends. That was until I asked about her boyfriend Django Stewart son of Eurhythmics Dave Stewart.  I was quickly brought back to my civilian status as one look to her agent resulted in a little telling off to me. Really I should have known better - no questions of the love kind.

Georgia May is the newest member of the Jagger household to enter the world of Celebrity-Ville. Despite having a ‘normal’ childhood the blonde bombshell hit the runway sprinting at the tender age of 15 and hasn’t looked back since. With constant comparisons to Brigitte Bardot and a gap between her teeth that’s more famous than the Suez Canal, Georgia May is carving a name for herself in the Jagger dynasty. Since following in her mother’s footsteps into the modelling world Georgia May has modelled for British Vogue in a shoot with fellow celebrity off spring Henry Hopper (son of the late Denis Hopper), she has also graced the cover of British Vogue and Australian Vogue, is the face of Rimmel London, has done campaigns for Versace (above left) and the lists go on. Proving she need not have been scared pursuing the same career as her mum.
“I mean it was pretty scary (entering the world of modelling) because obviously my mum is such a supermodel and it’s crazy but I think you just have to jump in, even for any girl because modelling is such a great opportunity and you get to travel and meet loads of different people,” says Georgia May.

Georgia May Jagger was born on January 12 1992, the third child of Jerry Hall and Mick Jagger. She has an older sister Elizabeth and older brother James while her younger brother Gabriel is five years her junior. With parents like these most would assume the Jagger children were exposed to a bohemian like lifestyle though Georgia May would have to disagree.

“I wouldn’t say it was particularly bohemian we had a pretty normal family home and all sort of went to the same school and hung out with friends from the same area,” describes Georgia May. “My mum is a real home bird.”

Despite claiming her childhood as being a normal one, being a member of the Jagger clan has to bring some celebrity frolicking. And of course it did as Georgia May and her siblings travelled the world with daddy and his band on tour, whilst most kids her age got to go camping in Butlins. Though for Georgia May touring wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be, instead it was days filled with hotel lobbies and concert venues.

“Yeah we went on tour which was cool but we didn’t get to see much. A lot of the time you’re only there for a day and so only see the hotel. I’d like to back to a lot of the places and explore
more.”

From talking to the nineteen year old one thing that is very apparent is that mum rules the roost and has been a hugely positive influence on her daughter. Georgia’s May’s admiration for her mum is honoured in the names she chose for her first collection for Hudson Jeans.
“It was influenced by my mum and her style when she was younger in the seventies and that sort of cool way they wore their jeans,” explains Georgia May. “She was so happy with the collection, she wears them all the time, she wears the Jerry!.”
This collection is her first move into fashion design. Being the face of Hudson jeans, Jagger knew a lot about the brand and often gave her own input in the styling of shoots which resulted in her being approached by the brand.

“Hudson approached me and asked me to come up with some sketches and samples of fabric and styles that I liked and that’s how it first started and it sort of became this organic relationship between me and Ben the creative director. It’s really great.”

While her mum was the main influence for the collection with styles called the Faye (Hall’s middle name) and the Gonzales (after the town Hall was born in Texas), Mick’s rock ‘n’ roll style has also played its part.

“There’s definitely a rock ‘n’ roll influence in the detail, which I tried to make more feminine, you know with leather pants I used softer fabrics,” explains Jagger.

It may not have been Studio 54 but Georgia May certainly has certainly had an interesting childhood from summers on tour with the Rolling Stones to sharing Christmas with her supermodel  mum,  rock legend dad, three siblings and three half siblings. I’m sure there’s never a dull moment in the Jagger household.

It seems that if wasn’t for Jerry Hall’s homely approach to parenthood, Miss Georgia May could have gone down a very different road. Thankfully she has taken the advice of her mum and realises that modelling isn’t forever.
“I’m going to university in London in September to study photography and printing,” says Jagger. “I’d like to get into filming and art. I’m only nineteen so I like to think I can keep my options open for now.”

Georgia May co-designed a tote bag with Marc Jacobs for the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign which are available at all Brown Thomas and BT2 stores right now for €35.
