The Hession Show at the L'Oreal Colour Trophy 2010
Having been blown away by the two hair shows performed at the L'Oreal Professional Colour Trophy 2010 in the O Reilly Hall UCD this year, by Brown Sugar and Hession Hairdressing, we decided to catch up with the people involved to pick their brains! Here we speak with Paul Hession from Hession Hairdressing:
Q: How long did the show take to prepare? Were u given a specific brief?
A: We have been working on the show every Sunday since the start of January. The first few Sundays were spent brain storming, trying to figure out what kind of story we wanted to tell. L’ oreal gave us so much freedom so it was just a matter of picking each others brains and being creative.
Q: What was your theme? How many were involved?
A: We were very inspired by Tim Burton. The man knows how to mix the dark and the crazy together perfectly with a touch of magic so we tried to do the same. We had three sections in the show and we split our fourteen strong team up into splinter groups so we could focus on one headpiece at a time. Everyone was so dedicated so we really put the work in. 5 of our pieces were completed before the day of the show but we were still required to place each piece on the models on the day! Our first section was all pre-done, this being our dark otherworldly beginning. The headpieces took weeks to perfect for this with each piece requiring minor adjustments along the way.
The second section had a mix of mad hatter/equestrian feel. We had three of our girls working on this on the day as it was the models natural hair that we were using. We didn’t want everything on the day to be pre-done so these were old fashioned Up-styles, with pink and copper hair wefts that our colourist’s prepared for us, placed on top and glued on with hairspray.
The third section was our magical part. We wanted to have a Narnia type feel to it with our Snow Queen and her two Foot Soldiers. For the snow queen we wanted her to be coming out of her Cocoon all beautiful with lace and butterflies in her hair. Her foot soldiers were half done before the big day. We made our hair balls using balloons, hair, hairspray and a dryer. It wasn’t until the day when we had the models in front of us did we cut the "helmets" to shape and add our crystals.
The dancers were all done on the day with their own natural hair-oh the power of back-combing and hairspray! We were inspired by the late Alexander Mc Queen and Avatar for the hair for the dancers. No pieces of hair or wire were used here, just crimping, backcombing and sculpting.
Q: What’s next for Hession Hairdressing?
A: We want to keep riding the creative wave we have found ourselves on because we're having great fun!
