Trend Report ss2010: What's New and What's Here to Stay?
2010 has arrived and as we wait for the spring summer collections to filter into the stores, it appears that a lot of 2009’s staples are set to return – some of which we are very happy about, some of which we are not.
Here to stay:
Military: Last year we saw a lot of military themed items – the military hats (towards the latter half of the season – very much Cheryl Cole inspired) and the military blazers. These are set to stay for the ss2010 season but perhaps with a somewhat ethnic twist.Blazers: They were huge in 2009 and indeed are around to stay for another while yet. Topshop and River Island championed some absolutely gorgeous blazers in 2009 and indeed they will do so again. Both structured blazers and looser boyfriend blazers are going to be big this season. Check out this structured blazer from the Betty Jackson Black spring summer 2010 collection at Debenhams for €78.
Jumpsuits: We went through a phase of hating jumpsuits here, mostly because they are so difficult to wear and it’s hard to hit on one that is remotely flattering in all the right places. However some of the stars on the red carpets, even here in Ireland, looked reasonably well in them. Anyway, they are apparently going to be around during this spring summer season too so either grab this trend with both hands and do it properly, or avoid it like the plague! You choose.
Leggings and skinny jeans etc: Yes we are actually really glad that this trend is around to stay for a little bit longer. Skinny jeans are flattering and leggings have been getting us out of a myriad of problems especially with dresses that were cute but just that bit too short and for braving the colder weather too. What we will see more of are wet look and leather and or pu trousers and leggings.
Belts: Yep, cinched in waists are back again too. So keep all those funky belts you bought in 2009 to the front of your wardrobe. Consider them with dresses and with trench coats for sprng summer 2010.
Open toe boots:
We have debated these in the office until we were blue in the face. They don’t make much sense really because as boots go, you may as well be wearing sandals in this freezing weather! But if you dare to care, there are some cute ankle boot styles around for spring summer 2010 and they too appear to be staying.
New to the Scene
Hot pants: Yep I said hot pants. Hot pants seem to be the bravest addition to the high street. These aren’t just city shorts, like we had a couple of years back, but actual hot pants (which, lets face it, are a step away from big, tight fitting bloomers). This season they appear in all sorts of metalics and fun colours and there are ways to incorporate them without looking like Divine Brown on a bad day. They can be worn over thick, fun coloured hosiery or even pulled on over a pair of leggings or jeggings. Fringing:
This is also a nod to the tribal, almost cowgirl, feel that we are going to see some of during spring summer 2010. We will see fringing on dresses, on coats, on bags and on shoes. Check out this gorgeous grey leather fringed bag from the spring summer collection at River Island €134.50
Futuristic warrior look: This type of style is appearing on the high street in the form of high shoulders, asymetric cuts, studs and fringing; combining tribal warrier with fashion forward beauty. It’s a great look when put together correctly.
Detailing: Lots of detailing will play a big part of ss2010. With ruffles back in abundance and indeed beading, fringing, feathering and larger than life, neckpieces, it will be a statement lovers’ heaven. Stores like Top Shop have some fantastic one off pieces that will ensure you stand out this season, such as this gorgeous ruffle crop jacket for £75 (sterling) on www.topshop.com. It’s also sporting the overriding colour of the season, a lovely warm cream.
