The Oscar Fashion Round Up 2010

Well, the fashion ‘night of the year’ has ended – although Oscar after-parties continue all over Hollywood – and despite the unexpected rain that poured down on the Kodak Theatre, the line of A list celebs last night were not deterred and enjoyed their moment in front of the many waiting fans and the hundreds of press cameras and crew that lined the tented red carpet. From an Irish point of view this was a very special night indeed with Richard Baneham from Tallaght and his colleagues won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects on Avatar. It certainly appeared to be a story of two films last night, with most of the nominations going to Avatar and The Hurt Locker. It turned out that The Hurt Locker was the big winner on the night, taking 6 of the Oscars home with them.
Apart from one or two revelations such as Monique who admitted that she doesn’t (and didn’t) shave her legs and under her arms for the occasion and that Sam Worthington admitted to donning ‘payless’ shoes on the red carpet, there was a rather conservative mood. Indeed the conservative mood played into the dress choices as well with many of the fashion choices being rather muted and underplayed, opting for elegance over statement making.

BEST DRESSED
Best dressred on the night for us was Kate Winslet. Looking demure and elegant in this stunning Yves Saint Laurent gown, that had a stunning gold hue to it, Kate proved once again that simplicity wins out every time. Her ‘hair to the side’, which was quite a popular look last night amongst the stars, was sophisticated and certainly epitomized Hollywood Glamour.

WORST DRESSED
The worst dressed was a toss up between Kristen Stewart and Vera Famiga. In the end, it was Kristen Stewarts obvious discomfort that pushed her across the finishing line. She is wearing Monique Huller and her face just says it all really. She isn’t happy in the dress, or in the spotlight it seems and the fact that the dress was rather dull (apart from the fishtail detail) didn’t help. Sorry Kristen.

Below: Vera Famiga was certainly in the mood for making statements. She was one of the few stars that opted for this kind of over the top dress. It is a Marchesa gown and it really got her noticed. The deep, warm colour is fabulous but the oversized layered ruffles are perhaps a little much for her slender frame.

Almost making the Best Dressed list – only losing by the skin of her teeth in fact – is Sandra Bullock. Looking rather statuesque and Oscar-like herself, she really wowed the cameras on the red carpet in this stunning beaded Marchesa gown which was elegant, muted and sophisticated. The finishing touch for this look was the fact that the muted gown was offset by her gorgeous dark hair and fabulous choice of lip colour.

Jennifer Lopez and Demi Moore.
Jennifer was absolutely stunning in this gorgeous, structured Armani gown. Highlighting her curves in all the right places, Jennifer looked every bit the movie star. Her hair sleeked back like this exposes her beautiful face. Thumbs Up.
Demi Moore’s ruffled Versace dress doesn’t look uber fantastic in this particular shot but in others, flows beautifully and is perfectly made for her slender, tall frame. The champagne colouring is just right against her skin tone. Any lighter and it would have faded away.

Sarah Jessica Parker donned an ivory silk Chanel Couture dress which, admittedly we weren’t crazy about on the red carpet, but as we examined it afterwards in pictures, actually quite liked it! It’s elegant necktie is perfect for SJP and the embellished neckline gives it just the right amout of detailing that it needs. Yes, it’s ok Sarah J, you haven’t made the best dressed tonight but we are giving it a thumbs up.

Mariah Carey could have made it to the worst dressed list if there hadn’t been even more shocking creations. Basically Mariah has shown that once again, she has gotten the ‘less is more’ theme a little backwards – they mean less flesh Mariah, not less dress!! Not particularly age appropriate, but certainly true to her current theme, this Valentino dress doesn’t do it for us here.
