London Fashion Week: Day 1
Well London Fashion Week got underway today (Fri 19th Feb) to a usual fantastic (Irish) start with our homegrown talent Paul Costello. The catwalk at Somerset House in London was set alight by what I dare to call one of Costello’s more adventurous collections of the past few years. It was a stunning and creative ensemble of pieces that although at first glance appeared widely varying, also had a clear continuing theme. What was the theme? Perhaps hard to put your finger on exactly (which is something I distinctly enjoyed) but certainly included elements of the dominatrix – the strong minded, fashion forward woman with an edge, but who also enjoys distinctly feminine elements. For instance, the colour black prevailed thoughout the collection, although, there were splashes of metallic gold also but both were incorporated into an almost futuristic theme. Leather, PVC and wet look leggings all featured but leather was definitely given a whole new catalyst in the form of what one would almost be tempted to call elongated cuffs which were on the arms and legs on most of his models. On the leg, they were knee high, but were cut off at the ankles – and on the arms , they were elbow length but cut off at the writsts. They gave a gorgeous hard, statement-making, edge, to even the most femeinine of his looks, such as his beautiful grey a line dresses. He also included gorgeous printed coats with huge statement collars and not forgetting ruffles. They were everywhere, small, oversized, you name it, but they added just the right amount femininity to this collection of highly structured outfits. No, Costello certainly didn’t disappoint.
Caroline Charles on the other had was an enjoyable but regrettably safe collection which comprised of outfits with distinct rustic country living theme –don't get me wrong, I enjoy rustic themes, but there seemed to be a lack of creativity - from chocolate browns, rustic greens and lots of herringbone and tweed, to slightly more daring leather skirts and knee high (although Wellington style) boots. Although there was this rustic palette the overriding colour was actually black. Between her choice of garments and the general theme, the overall collection was certainly ‘autumn winter’ but didn’t particularly excite.
Other designers, such as for instance, Amnika Wilmont, opted for altogether brighter palettes and indeed more daring use of prints but overall, todays line up has really whetted my appetite for what delectable delights tomorrow's schedule will bring.
