Comfy and Casual Wear for SS12 - by Tess Purcell

Some words of advice from 'Style Coach', Tess Purcell, of Style'n'Mind.

So, women in today’s society have to multi task from morning to night. This is something which, although we may not always think comes easy to us ladies, we generally end up doing because of course, our busy lifestyles dictate it.  From rearing a family, to stressful days at work, it’s not always possible or practical to wear those 6” heels or that tailored suit that has so little leeway in it, you have to breathe in just to sit into the car! Well, with the casual revolution still raging, it has now become much more acceptable to dress in a comfortable casual fashion during the day, while juggling all our daily tasks, whatever they may be.

The trick to successful casual dressing for work is to look smart and never scruffy. Dressing in casual clothes which are chosen carefully will bring you from dawn to dusk without ever once having to kick off uncomfortable shoes under the office desk. Here are some tips.

Casual at Work: When taking casual to work there are however some rules to adhere to. Denim is rarely expectable in the office environment unless specified and never venture to work wearing tube tops, super sheers or anything particularly flimsy or showing too much flesh. If you like to be colour co-ordinated, keep your casuals in easy to match colour combinations like – khaki, whites and blacks etc. By doing this you will have many different choices and easy to layer options. If you're a bit braver in terms of colour and cut, just remember to ensure your choices are appropriate for your work environment - but it's fair to say, everyone generally likes to see a bit of colour in their day!  Remember casual can also mean trendy - so try adopting the seasons trends, in this case, pastel colours, cute preppy shirts, cardigans, satchels and funky prints! See the cute example left from the gorgeous SS12 collection at Marc O Polo. How cute would this look be in the office? Don't forget that cute pumps can always be an acceptable alternative to heels in the office, unless perhaps it's a particularly important meeting or a presentation etc where heels might be more appropriate.

Sportswear: Of course, sportswear is much more attractive and comfortable nowadays than it used to be - and in many cases, comfortable sportswear, transcends into being casual homewear, lounge wear and urban streetwear also. For sportswear that you actually want to exercise in, think comfortable, breathable materials and look to the experts such as Nike, adidas, Puma and so on for the best advice as to what you should be wearing for what sport. In the main, sportswear should remain just that - but if you feel like throwing on something easy and comfortable around the house, it can be the perfect solution. check out the lovely Nike vest top in our picture below, which was taken from the current spring collection at Littlewoods Ireland.

Some key wardrobe essentials for bringing sporty casual onto the street, are the plain T shirt, ranging in different colours, neck lines and sleeve lengths (short sleeved tees layered over long ones are ultra handy, cosy and trendy) The tee is both a standalone piece or a brilliant basic for layering.

Also handy to note when bringing sportswear to the street, comfortable hoodies are a great bet, khaki or combat trousers also - and if u love your flat training shoes, swap out the runners for some fab retro sneakers such as a pair of funky Converse All Stars etc.
