Swap Shop!
During my days here in DCU, fashion is never far from my mind! Around campus there is an array of unique styles to ogle over... My friends and I could literally sit on the couches in our Uni building and clothes-watch all day long, if we didn’t have to squeeze in a class or two! It’s not surprising considering the range of individuals all roaming around campus from all corners of the country, and abroad! It’s a visual hub for style scoping! I have noticed there are definitely certain fashion cliques that really stand out in DCU- from the artsy crowd with their skinnies, funky band t-shirts and token converse, to the D4 types, with the stunning pastel shades, shinny designer bags and obligatory Ugg boots. Then you’ve got the comfy crowd who prefer their sporty casuals, think Abercrombie hoodies, slouchy trackies hair bands and the likes, and also the top to toe Topshop girls, rocking up the recognizable floral prints and chunky knits. It is refreshing to see that young people today are not afraid to experiment and express themselves through clothing.
Myself and my friends are somewhere between the D4 brigade and the toppers girls, loving our florals and our insanely comfy Uggs, but opting to mix things up with some pretty (and reasonable) penny’s bits, and one off finds. I have come to realize in recent weeks, that an unbelievable swapping trend has emerged. I know that girls swapping dresses and whatnot has been around for donkeys, but I have come to notice that in my circle of friends, the ‘facebook photo’s of me’ option has been used as a handy swapping tool. For example, a certain white floaty short number has done the rounds between five of the girls, ranging from Malahide to Letterkenny, in the past three months! Unreal! If dresses could talk... It amazes me, how many times I have been sent a sneaky link one of my previous outfits on facebook chat, followed by a little ‘’I was wondering..’’ message. I think, at this age, and when money is less than plentiful, that this sharing is caring attitude amongst friends is a brilliant idea! I was at a launch party for the new nightclub Concrete Jungle in Temple Bar last week-and the week prior to the night, I had fretted over what ensemble I would put together for the event... A few clicks later, I was sorted with a royal blue number, donated from a friend, personalised with my own accessories, and the favour was returned to said friend with a little body-con skirt I had long since forgotten! A great new virtual way to acquire ‘new’ outfits, along as you take care of the items, and are generous yourself! It will be interesting to see if this phenomenon spreads and goes the distance! - I remember when we used to share our clothes a LOT in our student going-out days... from swapping shoes to mixing and matching various one-pieces (so that entire outfits weren't seeing the same pub two or three times in the one week! lol) but as usual it was always our girl friends who would cop on to the swapping (and approve generally) as for the lads?? You could be wearing the same outfit for A MONTH and they wouldn't notice!!! lol Topshop is an excellent choice for mixing and matching and finding fantastic one off pieces - also vintage and swap shop stores are a haven for individuality and are really reasonably priced too!! Perfect for our tight budgets at the moment..
