Snow Control to Major Tom
Ireland can be a pretty miserable place weather-wise. We are cloaked in a grey, wet mist for most of the year with fleeting outbreaks of sunshine and good humour. But we are NOT prepared for snow. One snowflake and the whole country grinds to a halt. Mass absenteeism, chronic traffic problems and apocalypse-style food shopping. But the real crisis is this: What To Wear? A pragmatic approach would suggest: hiking boots (sigh), ski gloves (sigh), thermal layers (sigh) and practical hats (sigh). But must we relinquish all sense of style? I think not. The weather is depressing enough; we need frivolous, colourful, patterned fun to get us through these frosty days. We need cheerful, festive hoodies; we need scarves that fizz with colour; we need warm but funky gloves. Our hats must bring happiness; our jackets must remind us that style is not lost in this icy battleground. And lest we not forget the fashion ammunition beneath the surface – manicured nails, fingers bedecked with rings and pretty, matching lingerie! Take that snow!
