The Terra Incognita of Juliette Lewis

‘Going so far outside of yourself, into the unknown’

I just love this lady, how could I not?

She’s batshit crazy, but it’s that incredible kind of crazy, the kind of crazy you wouldn’t mind being. Eccentric and ethereal, like Kate Bush but in glitter and spandex with flowing acid-blue hair. I wanted her hair. I really, really wanted her hair. And it reminded me of a mermaid’s... all floaty and flyaway as if submersed underwater.  I did contemplate dying my hair that blue, I even did some sleuthing for the exact dye she used. In the end I chickened out. I know - how disappointing. I kept visualizing my manager’s reaction, which of course was in the negative, very negative. Then again the more I thought about it the more I knew I could never pull it off, instead of having acid-blue mermaid hair I’d have ended up with bobbed blue hair looking like I’m on acid. Or something. So I decided against it, for now.

It’s not blue anymore but that picture fixed her in my mind, and boy has that girl got style, yes she has a stylist but it’s more than that. She’s strong and expressive and real style is about who you are, not what you wear. Wearing whatever with guts and attitude. I mean you can buy all the fancy couture you want but you can’t buy attitude. I admire her, because, she knows how to lose it on and off stage, constantly going outside of herself, it’s so raw and inspiring.

She went through a bright leotard and feather wearing phase for a while, which was cool, I semi imagined myself in her Hot Kiss video dancing down the street, except I would have had glitter on my face. Then again you don’t need to be in a music video to dance down a street. You just need to be minus dignity and slightly drunk and still kind of fearless, oh and gutsy. Okay, maybe just fearless…

So. I started of writing about someone I’m slightly in awe of but I think she’s a bit of a metaphor, for what style is all about, for me anyway. Fearlessness and attitude, I mean.
