Maybe .......... she's not wearing any makeup?
Praise the makeup Gods - Autumn’s brand new beauty trends are blissfully straight-forward and universally flattering! And Maybelline have got it just right yet again! Adopting the "less is more" approach, this season's "barely there" look means that a slick of lipstick, a nude eyeshadow, a luscious flick of liquid liner or a pretty pastel manicure means that you'll be bang on trend and pretty as a picture into the bargain!
Below, Maybelline New York’s Celebrity Make-Up Artist Fiona Jolly, explains the key looks for the nude make up trend for Autumn/Winter 2010 and gives us some tips for wearing it well! Nice one! Fancy making your bottom lip look fuller without succumbing to collagen?? Fancy making your eyes appear brighter?? Fancy slimming your face?? Fiona's tips below are miraculous and will transform us all to nudilicious beauties for the coming season.
1. Go Nudist!
Product must-have: Maybelline New York EyeStudio Mono in Silken Taupe (rrp €5.97)
Not nudist in the clothing sense - but we are recommending that you strip back your make-up! At the Autumn/Winter catwalk shows, chic shades of caramel, camel and beige were accentuated with rose lips for a minimalist look, but this nude trend is anything but boring - it uses modern shimmer and shine to really bring your look to life.
The Carlos Miele show highlighted beautifully bare make-up, where nude skin and new Lash Stiletto Voluptuous mascara [rrp €11.94] created an innocent look. Maybelline New York’s Spanish Make-up Artist, Gato, was inspired by “sophisticated women” and blended nude and sand shades on the cheeks, using Pure.Cover Liquid Mineral concealer [rrp €8.99] as highlighter. That’s multitasking! Just dot it over your cheekbones and then blend.
According to Fiona Jolly:
1. The chicest way to go nude is by smoothing on Dream Creamy moisturizing foundation [rrp €12.34].
2. Groom your brows! The easiest way is to use a clean mascara wand and brush them upwards to give your face an athletic edge.
3. Sweep dark grey or chocolate shadow into the outer sockets of your eyes and smudge a neutral taupe across the whole eyelid. If you’re doing night-time nude, smear soft shimmer over the lid (Fiona swears by EyeStudio Mono in Taupe and Chocolate Chic [rrp €5.97].)
4. Using a creamy pencil inside your inner eyelid will make the whites of your eyes appear brighter,” says Fiona, who also suggests a slick of natural gloss on the lips citing that, “neutral lip gloss is a girl’s best friend! Just make sure you choose a shade that works with your natural skin tone.” To finish off this look, use the new Color Sensational Pearls in Cashmere Rose [rrp €10.45] over the lips.
2. Contouring is back!
Product must-have: Maybelline New York Dream Matte Mousse (rrp €11.94)
This season Michael Kors and Max Azria both showed contoured blusher. The technique has long been a style secret of the chic set as it’s a quick way to slim your face that doesn’t involve wearing excessively heavy make-up. Result!
Don’t be concerned by contouring’s dated reputation. “You can avoid the dreaded 80s stripe by using two brushes – one to apply colour and a clean one for blending,” reveals Fiona. Create natural shadow to the face by using a matte colour three shades darker than your natural blush (try Dream Matte Mousse [rrp €11.94]) and contour your face early in your make-up. “Good contouring means you won’t need to use as much product on the rest of your face” explains Fiona. If you’re after instant uplift (who isn’t?), Fiona has this advice: “Sweeping the same blush colour over your eye sockets will make your eyes look made-up before you apply anything else.” Sweet cheeks!
3. Bold Brows
Product must-have: Maybelline New York Kohl Express (rrp €5.99)Groomed eyebrows are like punctuation marks for your face. According to Fiona, “Get bold brows by brushing your brows up then sketching in short, feathered, upwards strokes with Kohl Express pencil [rrp €5.99].” Swapping eyeliner for matte shadow (Fiona adores EyeStudio Mono Chocolate Chic [rrp €5.97]) will make the look more wearable, as will using a brow brush; Fiona explains that, “using a brow brush will soften any harsh lines. When you’re drawing in your brows, steer clear of drawing past the inner eye, as it can make you look like you’re frowning!” Keep the focus on your brave brows and wear with neutral eyeshadow and a slick of black mascara.
4. Last Tango
Product must-have: Maybelline New York new EyeStudio Quad in Coral Drama (rrp €9.95)
Think orange and apricot… Summer springs to mind! But these hot, strong colours switched seasons and have grabbed Autumnal attention for your eyes. Fiona Jolly reveals that these tones are a well-kept secret in the industry - “coral colours give a youthful glow without being obvious. Wearing orange eyeshadow might seem scary but these shades are incredibly versatile and wearable.”
Fiona uses two shades (like new EyeStudio Quad in Coral [rrp €9.95]) to give extra depth to the eyes, making the colour appear more interesting. To recreate the Dior look, Fiona suggests sweeping the strongest shade along the lash line, bringing the colour up into the socket and blending outwards as you go. “Lifting the colour at the outer edges of your eye will give your whole face a flattering lift too. Next, apply the lighter shade around the edges as a ‘halo’. If you’re brave, apply the darker colour with a damp brush, blending as it dries” Fiona advises. For extra intensity, finish off with lashings of Fiona’s favourite, new Falsies Mascara [rrp €12.39].
At Yves Saint Laurent, burnt sienna shades looked ravishing (Fiona loves ExpertWear Blush in Golden Bronze [rrp €7.46]) and were mixed with golden shimmer (try EyeStudio Mono in Gold Diamonds [rrp €5.97]) plus a flick of liquid liner for a womanly look.
One last get-a-glow tip: According to Fiona, “adding a dash of apricot eyeshadow into your blush colour instantly brightens the whole of your face.” Who knew?
5. The Lip Stick
Product must-have: Maybelline New York Color Sensational in Fatal Red (rrp €10.45)
“Dark lips are the easiest way to make your makeup bang on-trend for Autumn 2010,” says Fiona. Lips stained in grungy shades of violet or port, with the model’s cupid’s bows defined with liner, are a strong trend. According to Fiona, “Color Sensational in Midnight Plum or Galactic Mauve [rrp €10.45] are both “perfect” for this look. To find the most natural shape, line your lips after you’ve applied lipstick as it’ll be easier to find your natural lip shape. This lip look is not about perfection, just depth of colour, so the darker you dare to go the more impact it will have!”
Strong lips have a tricky reputation but follow Fiona’s insider tips for a perfect pout.
1. Keep lipstick on your lips and off your teeth by putting your finger in your mouth after application then pull it out, wiping the excess lipstick off your inner lip with your finger.
2. You can avoid the dreaded ‘Joker smile’ by only using lip pencil (never lipstick) in the corners of your mouth.”
3. Fiona explains that darker colours are more manageable when they’re glossy. “Slick a coat of matching lipgloss over the top of your lipstick for a wearable version of this look.”
4. You can make your dark lips ‘pop’ by dabbing light concealer (Fiona recommends Dream Mousse Concealer [rrp €8.99]) around the outer edges of your mouth.
5. Fancy cheating the shape of your lower lip? Fiona reveals her secret technique: “Apply a light brown matt eye shadow under the natural curve of your bottom lip. It fakes a shadow, making your lips look fuller and more sensual.” We promise we won’t tell!
